AI for Empowering Animal Shelters

Animal shelters and rescue/rehoming organisations generally have very limited resources.  To make the situation more challenging, some organisations have hundreds of animals in their care at any given time, and have numerous programs they are overseeing within their communities.

Conversational AI has the potential to allow organisations to better allocate the limited resources they do have to where they can be most useful.

Because this is a specialised field, there is the potential for generic conversational AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT) to spread misinformation and non-scientifically sound resources on animal behaviour, veterinary care, etc., all of which can lead to negative outcomes for animals.  In order to ensure that organisations have access to accurate information on such topics, this project seeks to develop conversational AI that is specifically designed for this application.

After an initial analysis of the challenges that organisations face on a daily basis, some of the areas where there is the potential for conversational AI to be highly beneficial are:  providing post-adoption support for people who have acquired an animal from the organisation, internal training of staff and volunteers within organisations, and screening/responding to phone/email inquiries from the public.

The ultimate goal of the implementation of conversational AI for these purposes and others is to improve the welfare of animals – both those that are and are not in each organisation’s care.
